TedX

TedX was a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of information from experts with a strong knowledge base of their topic. The format used by the organizers of multiple presentations on topics so varied, ranging from biking to ambiguous geneitalia may be off putting to some. However it reminds me of the rationale behind a strong liberal arts education. Exposure to new ideas, to knowledge outside of one's scope, to information beyond one's experiences allows for great opportunity.

It is only by opening ourselves up to new ideas that we can grow as people and as artists. TedX brings together innovators and those who want to become innovators. It brings together brilliant minds and allows those minds to share their brilliance and opens the listeners to becoming more brilliant.

TedX is inspirational  in the ingenuity of its diversity, its excellent presenters, its wealth of knowledge, and is on my calendar for 2012.

TEDx Rochester and RIT Link

While waiting for TEDx to start and looking over the speaker lineup, 6 out of 15 of the speakers are involved with RIT in some form or another.

This should be interesting.

Begin rant

LinkedIn: Do you know what bugs me about linkedin? When people can't be bothered to send a personalized note asking to be a part of their network and just send the default invite.

If you are serious about getting connected to people, send a personalized note. If you don't know that person, let them know why you want to connect with them specifically.

10 Thesis ideas

1) Creating a better penholder for the Wacom tablet line

2) Creating all the assets for a movie about living a life and aging.  The main part of the thesis would be the design of the character as well as the aging process and textures

3) Creating the 2057 Chevrolet in 3D.  Much like the Thunderbird, Mustang, PT Cruiser, Prowler and Camero

4) Designing an installation piece in the bathroom that would track if someone washed their hands, a laser would project on the floor if they had or not and would follow them around.

5) Design the website for the Transportation Museum, creating immersive video be highly functional

6) Create a website that has just menus on it from restaurants near you.  They would all be formatted the same and would be easily navigable so when someone wants to eat something, they can just look it up and easily know how to navigate the menu.  It would include an allergy section so you will be able to know if you can eat it or not.

7) Create and Design an android app for gold index.  Offering another way to purchase gold.

8) Create the set and characters for an animation about hope called Occlusion

9) Design a better baby carrier

10) Create a realism vs hyper real CG comparisons.  I find images, or take the images my self and recreate them in cg. trying to make people look twice and hopefully guess the wrong image.

Electree 3 on Industrial Design Served

With more and more electronics that we have to charge, I'm loving this idea to charge them via the sun. It is an interesting design because it uses natural visual elements to capture the energy. It's like a mini bonzi tree.

Perhaps I need one of these for the house. =)
Seriously though, it seems weird that something so confining would be appealing. It seems to me the lighting and conforming seat would be comfortable. The only flaw that I see it that the monitor looks like it is in a place that is not very ergonomic and that after a bit of time, your neck would feel strained.

Also note to self...

Don't buy the cheap bread to save money, it tastes like rubber. =\

Motion Design Reel.

Patrick Clair Motion Design Reel 2010

I found this reel from a link about Google.  I really like the motion graphics he uses in his designs.

This is the google video he did.

Museums via Google!

This is a fantastic site to visit museums and even explore the work of many artists.  You can zoom in close like google earth and really look at each brush stroke if you want!!!  check out Starry Night as an example.

Meet Buck Character Design and animation inspiration

Here is a fantastic work with stylish characters. I'm really impressed with the texturing to give a painterly look.

And here is a close up of the texturing

Character design inspiration

This is an animation that is pretty gruesome but the character design and texturing is fantastic

And here is the breakdown of the work involved to get the look

Inspiration...

Here are a couple people / things  I find inspiring...

Anthony Gormley

A CASE FOR AN ANGEL III
I find his sculptures truly incredible.

  • In Case for an Angel - He uses the space to make the viewer have to move around and inspect his work from all sides. If you want to see the back of the sculpture you have to duck under the wings.

  • Field - is an erie scene where the viewer is confronted with thousands of tiny red sculptures with a basic body shape and two eyes.  Reading about this work, it was created with help from many people.  As with people, no two characters are alike.

Vincent van Gogh

He has always been inspiring to me.  The melting, swirling brush strokes always help to make my eyes wander around his images.

  • The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise - I was fortunate enough to see this at Musee d'Orsay, Paris.  I think one of the things that struck me most about his work is that it feels 100x more vibrant than any picture I have seen of any of his work.  The blue in the windows of this painting are riveting.  I must have spent 15minutes just admiring his use of color.
  • Starry Night - you can just feel the warmth of the evening settling around you.

1957 Chevrolet

This car is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen.  The designers really nailed it perfectly.  Every line on the car is a work of art. I have in the back of my mind an idea to design the 2057 chevrolet.  I think that would be a great design challenge.  In the similar fashion that mustang, charger, camaro, and thunderbird were redesigned for a contemporary look.
